Avenue of The Sphines
Another Wonderful Egyptian Acheivement
On the 25th November 2021 Egypt opened the Avenue of the Sphinxes in Luxor, which runs from Luxor Temple to Karnak a distance of around 3kilometers.
It was rediscovered in 1949 and has taken until now to restore and unearth the entire magnificent route.
The road is believed to have been built to celebrate the annual Opet Festival in the ancient city of Thebes, now known as Luxor. The festival promoted fertility and included a procession that carried a statue of ceremonial gods from Karnak Temple to Luxor Temple.
It will surely become another vital component of any visit to Luxor city which is of course on the opposite side of the River Nile to other major sights such as the Valley of the Kings.
